04/08/2008
The gong is considered among the oldest world instrument all over the world. Almost around four thousand years ago, the archeologists unearthed the gongs. There is no wonder in accepting that the sound of a gong feels like touching our soul.
It was in China around the 6th century when the earliest written on gong was mentioned. The Chinese then claimed in these ancient documents that a different culture from Central Asia had leaded the existence of the gong among them. So, there exists some confusion regarding the introduction of the gongs. Thus, it will be right to say that the sound of gong resonated among the people of Chinese and made that their own.
The Chinese usually used the Chinese gongs for different ceremonial functions. They used to strike the gongs at the time when any Emperor or any other religious and political figures arrived. The Military leaders for the purpose of gathering all the men in the field for battle, having the same utilities as drums, also used the gongs. Bodhran is very popular instrument.
The gong along with its music spread across from China to Java and by the 9th century and got established in Indonesia. The large flat gongs of the Chinese were different from the Javanese gongs. Slowly the gongs then migrated from Asia to Africa. Finally in the eighteen century the gong arrived at Europe. The gong was usually of indefinite pitch when the Europeans saw first and heard about the big gongs of the Chinese.
